Recently I talked with a businessman Mr. Chhiv Earn who has multiple businesses ranging from mini mart, gas station, fresh fruit shop, café, call center, lab equipment trading ….. Among these businesses, lab equipment strikes me the most.
The reason that I chose to speak with Mr. Chhiv Earn is that he understands well about market opportunities, and he has an interesting but applicable perspective about Cambodian farmers or producers. According to him, Cambodian producers should focus on meeting local demands, instead of trying to export. Mr. Chhiv Earn said that Cambodian agriculture is finding its hard time to compete against its neighbors in terms of export. Therefore, Cambodian farmers and producers should instead focus on producing for domestic sales and improving quality to fight against imports from neighboring countries.
Standard and quality improvement is a key to promote domestic products for domestic needs. With his large networks and acknowledging the needs for quality assurance and promotion, Mr. Chhiv Earn links between producers and testing equipment from oversea. The stronger links he has, the higher quantity of orders he enjoys.
His ideas come with challenges. Producers have limited understanding about quality standard. Many consumers focus on prices despite some start to think more about health and quality. There are also limited experts who can operate the testing equipment.
Education helps producers understand the importance of quality control for competition. Currently, Mr. Chhiv Earn is putting his efforts to educate producers about quality standards and how to assure the quality. With customers who order lab equipment, he is helping customers to understand more processes and how to use the equipment effectively through a learning management system where customers can learn and monitor their progresses.
Customers who can produce with quality will be
able to join his network of community market and build their band of quality
domestic products. Outside the box, he engages local leaders and government
officers so that his effort will go as smooth as possible.
Seeing the problems and creating solutions are vital to his business. Mr. Chhiv Earn is quick to see the problems and opportunities as well as having ideas on how to serve. He is my inspiration on how to observe, analyze and serve.
During the conversation, Mr. Chhiv Earn mentioned about his mistakes in creating local markets to promote local products. Too many people from media came to interview him and he told too much to the interviewers. It became uncontrolled with the interpretation about what was going on. As a result, local government officers backed off due to the fact they felt that Mr. Chhiv Earn was trying to compete for their popularity. He said he should have been more cautious it about.
Despite challenges, I am confident that this entrepreneur would be successful because there is a strong need and trend for this type of products.
My personal takeaway from this experience
is that I must learn to build network and learn about new opportunities.
